Fenton John Anthony Hort
Fenton J A Hort was born at the home of his grandmother Lady Mary Hort in 1828 in Dublin. From 1842 – 1846, he attended Rugby School and in his second term moved into a study with his cousin Sir John Joscelyn Coghill of Drumcondra, known as Joscelyn. Later in his life, Joscelyn married Katherine Frances (Plunkett) and their son was Nevill Josiah Aylmer Coghill (VC).
He was a noted theologian and edited a Greek language version of the New Testament with Brooke Foss Westcott published in 1881 entitled The New Testament in the Original Greek. The work created a sensation among scholars and was considered by many to be the nearest approximation yet made to the original New Testament text.
Fenton J A Hort also jointly established the Journal of Classical and Sacred Philology.
He died in 1892.
Fenton J A Hort’s sister, Catherine Frances Hort (1833 – 1892) married Revd Garnons Williams of Abercamlais in 1854. Her grandparents were Sir John Balthazar (Coghill) MP and baronet and Lady Mary (Nee Hort).
